The project revolved around design and installation work fitting out an empty shell and core space into a visitor centre for the new Waterside Campus in Northampton. Harrisons were employed off the back of a quick turnaround tender process, given less than 2 weeks to get together a bid for this project. Given the urgent need for this facility, the University required this high specification project completed within just 8 weeks (including design phase). The work is summarised as follows:

    • Acoustic and fire-rated partitions throughout
    • Acoustic and fire-rated doors throughout
    • Grid ceiling & MF (plasterboard) ceilings throughout
    • Floor finishes including carpet tiles and antistatic vinyl
    • Fitted bespoke joinery items including Corian reception desk
    • LED lighting incorporated into ceilings
    • Heating and cooling systems (VRF Heat Recovery)
    • Heat recovery ventilation
    • Integrated alarm systems to sitewide network
    • Small power and CAT6A data installation
    • Sanitaryware installation
    • Ceramic tiling

Construction

The new visitor’s centre has been designed to be a secure and safe place for those working within. Most of the walls form the fire compartment and are therefore fire rated. All doors supplied were Black laminate, acoustic and fire rated. Where required new doors are on the campus access control network and maglocks have been fitted. Grid ceilings were formed to leave a service void throughout the space except for the main reception area which was formed in plasterboard. Floor finishes as specified by the architect including anti-static vinyl for IT service areas.

Electrical

Harrisons undertook the following summary of electrical design and build activities, many of these are from taken from our own experiences on other similar projects are undertaken previously.

  • LED lighting throughout, including dimmable where required
  • Lighting control via local switches and light-sensing PIR sensors
  • Addressable fire & intruder alarm system linked to site network
  • Small power Installation
  • Cat 6A Data installation
  • Metering Installation

Mechanical

Harrisons carried out the mechanical design and build works as summarised below, elements have been utilized from previous projects however some new manufacturers and technologies were used.

  • VRF heat recovering air conditioning
  • Duty & stand by split units for comms room
  • Disabled WC sanitaryware installation
  • Hot & cold-water services
  • Heat recovery ventilation
  • Shower installation

Reception Desk & Fitted Furniture

As part of this project we were required to supply and install various items of bespoke furniture including the following:

  • Corian reception desk
  • Sliding hit and miss glazing to the reception desk
  • Kitchen units, cleaners & utility cupboards
  • IT workstation arrangement
  • IPS to Disabled WC
